Shared space: an example

The shared space in Luxembourg

These days I'm in Luxembourg for a project on the safety of pedestrian crossings. The city center is a concrete application of the concept of shared space, or space shared between different road users.
It 'was introduced by reducing the maximum speed differential between cars, bicycles, motorcycles (a few around here, I think I'd seen one ....) and pedestrians. It 'was introduced a "Zone 20" and was removed most of the signs: Pedestrians must not look for the pedestrian crossing, because in this area do not need. They can cross wherever they want. The drivers know this and with very reduced speed, they know they may encounter pedestrians, bicycles, but in essence they can commit what would otherwise be a large pedestrian area. There are no sidewalks, no need, because space is shared and everyone has to take care not to occupy or use it inappropriately: the same pedestrians can "give priority" to a car.
The philosophy, as guessed, is that of co-operation between road users. One interesting thing that seems to work. I know, you say, we are in Luxembourg and not in the traffic of Rome, to drive in Naples or Florence casino. However, Luxembourg has a higher rate of motorization in the Italian one. And yet ....
