Advisor: Chimay beer and cheese. Obligatory stop.

Chymay is a region in the south of Belgium, Wallonia. It 'a small town near the border with France. But it is mostly a Belgian Trappist beer, famous throughout the world, still produced by the monks.

A few miles from town is a lovely place for beer lovers: Poteaupré is a bit 'hotel, a little' pub, a little 'restaurant. Or rather, all of this together. We stopped last night in one of our tours through Belgium. Rainy day and, after a brief visit to Notre-Dame de all'Abazzaia Scormount of Cistercian monks, we have become intrigued by a panel hung at the gate: beer and cheese tasting at the farm two miles from here. On. POTEAUPRE is easy to find, not only because it is one of the few buildings along the street, but because it is always attended.

The local and very large and well kept. The staff is very friendly and ready to cuddle. Several rooms, veranda with a large play area for children and very green and pastures (and cows) just in front. It 'a restaurant, but we arrived in the afternoon. Do not worry, they serve different to beer and cheese tasting, of course, beer. 3 is the traditional tasting glasses 18cc Beer Chimay (red cap, yellow and blue) on a nice wooden frame that supports the three glasses vertically accompanied by a cheese platter as many flavors. As always excellent way to enrich the flavors. The Chimay cheese is soft and pasta are seasoned in the cellars of the abbey.

The menu that contains tables to find information about the area, the explanation of the various cheeses and some recipes, in an attempt to replicate the flavors and aromas that you find in there. You can take it with you at the exit. It 'a nice thing, I think.

Inside the pub / restaurant is a small shop that sells cheeses, beers, drinks and merchandise variety of Chimay. I highly recommend the cheese.

In short, a place that is really at least a short stop. If you want a preview, here's the site , in Italian. Moreover, the Chimay is found in Italy ....

When users give votes: Advisor

I go to Trip Advisor and often before deciding whether to go to a restaurant, a hotel or a bed-and-breakfast I go to see what users say that there have been.

It 'a beautiful system, a bit' like ebay feedback. It is probably not the only one, but I find Tripadvisor very well done (in fact many operators and industry associations do not like ....) and reliable (I do not believe in forced and still reading reviews the various contributions they make a weighted average, beyond than the portal already offers in terms of average score). And 'one of the great opportunities offered by the network, giving users more control over the quality being offered to them, in this case in tourism: the manager of the hotel or restaurant is in fact stimulated to improve.

Occasionally I contribute with some reviews of places I happen to attend. I thought nobody read but not, apparently, but I was wrong ....

If you still have to plan your vacation or if you have already programmed, and you have some good advice on where to eat, remember to first go on trip.

By the way, my profile is here on Tripadvisor . Other advice on Tripadvisor category (Travel) of the blog.

Advisor: Brugge, the procession, cycling and Belgian beer

Whoever arrives in Belgium (or those who live there) can not fail to visit Bruges. It's called the "Venice of the North": forget the comparison and above all there is nothing in Venice, but Brugge is really lovely. If you can rent a bicycle and turn late at night, say from 9.30 to 10.30/11.00. Start with a good light, it's nice to find a beautiful sunset on buildings and churches, and finished with street lights reflected on the channels: exciting, especially because you do not find cars and probably even fewer people. Brugge, I say, it is (Thanks Frauke!).

I happened to be there the day of the procession of the Holy Blood (June 2, Ascension Day every year since 1304), with beautiful costumes and scenes ( here a set ), then probably the day that attracts the most tourists in Bruges throughout the year. The Procession of the Holy Blood of Bruges is listed among the UNESCO Intangible HERITAGE

But here we are in Flanders (better, West Flanders) and drink beers, beers that you do not find in supermarkets but only in some good beer. Here is one, mark it down: ' tBrugs Beertje . The subtitle says it all: Specialist Belgische streekbieren . When we entered the small room (up to day Institute) was full, as I imagine almost always. local people, mainly young people. So tourism led the procession has to do not think a lot. As you enter the bar with a striking display an endless series of glasses beer of any kind. Sitting is not easy and you have to hold you in equipping small tables. You sit down and take a book with suits instead of beers. If you are coming from outside do not know very probably, or you jump, or ask as I did. Local beers, of course. If you connect to the site identified in the various photos the owner, you know you need and advise you.

As you can see I have taken the Streffe Hendrik, black 11 °, "quadruple", produced right here in Brugge (they tried to move it, but did not have the same scent, and people do not buy .... In the face of globalization and large groups industrial). Obviously the council.

Another suggestion. If you have time and you have to go back to Brussels, leave the highway and set your browser to "roads" and let yourself be driven at low speeds in the area of Flanders on the line Brugge-Brussels-Antwerp-St.Nikolas. There are about 120 km fascinating. A slow pace. To taste. Like a good beer ... ..
