In 2009 there was the introduction of a new Euro NCAP evaluation system that assigns a score for overall security in four areas: adult passengers, children, pedestrians and Security Assistance. For the first time, Euro NCAP is now able to indicate what are the five safest cars for 2009, according to the maximum five stars assigned to them and their overall score. Topping the list are the Volkswagen Golf VI, which had been tested for the first time in 2008 with the previous system of assessment and had confirmed in 2009.
Two vehicles with low fuel consumption, the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius Hybrid, in tests of 2009 came in second and third place in the Euro NCAP vehicle safer in crash tests. In fourth place we find the Hyundai i20, while there are three cars tied for fifth place - the Toyota Avensis, Volvo XC60 and 'Opel / Vauxhall Astra. The worst result of the year for Euro NCAP has been the Suzuki Alto.
In 2009, Euro NCAP crash tests, referred to thirty-three car models, using up to a total of three cars, three front seats, four seats for children and a range of spare parts for each model.
